With the rise of supermarkets in many parts of Africa, many people no longer buy local fresh produce, others buy canned and processed foods that are causing a huge increase in diseases. The main health benefit of locally grown food is that it’s fresher. Fruits and vegetables begin to lose their nutrients within 24 hours of being picked, so fresher produce is more nutritious. In addition, locally grown food is picked at its peak ripeness, when it’s most dense with nutrients. Eating locally means you’ll be eating in season, it is an investment in your community, it cares for the environment, and t is more likely to be organic.
