Intro to Wawi Art.
My life as an artist started with storytelling. I would tell stories from my childhood growing up in a rural village in Kenya. After moving to America, I recognized a great disparity between the childhood I knew and the misinformation America was producing about Africa. This website is dedicated to the ancestors who kept the culture alive, those who continue to tell our stories, and those who are willing to learn the truth about Africa. My wish is that whatever feelings my art brings to your awareness, that they be of love.

Artist statement:
I grew up at a time when colonialism had taken roots in the African culture, displacing age-old natural and symbiotic ways of life. I feel grateful to have known and lived these ways of life. Today, I breathe these blessings into every one of my creations. Much in the same way the storyteller needs a listener, I believe art itself is an interplay of disciplines, all supporting and influencing one another, expanding the blessings, and sharing them with all who have the heart to receive them. The cultures of Africa deeply inspire me, as I am profoundly connected to them, in experience and in spirit. I share their beauty openly in hopes of replacing what has been lost.
